The Role Of Artificial Intelligence In Optimizing Project Management For International Business Expansion

Abstract

This study critically investigates the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in optimising project management practices to support international business expansion. Employing a quantitative survey of 75 project professionals across diverse global regions, the research explores AI's perceived impact on planning accuracy, execution control, risk mitigation, and cross-cultural collaboration within international project contexts. Although positive perceptions were identified, most hypothesised relationships lacked statistical significance, necessitating a cautious and exploratory interpretation of results. The findings suggest that AI contributes to improved decision-making speed, supports predictive analytics, and offers tools for dynamic risk awareness particularly relevant for navigating the complexity of cross-border operations. Comparative insights indicate that multinational corporations (MNCs) tend to integrate AI strategically within portfolio and market expansion initiatives, whereas small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) focus on operational scalability and efficiency. However, variations in organisational and cultural readiness, especially in non-Western regions, appear to moderate AI's perceived benefits. Ethical concerns particularly data privacy, algorithmic bias, and governance disparities emerged as key considerations in international AI deployment. These findings highlight the importance of embedding responsible governance into AI strategies, tailored to regional contexts and organisational maturity. Practical recommendations include the adoption of hybrid AI-human decision frameworks, development of culturally adaptive ethical oversight structures, and phased integration of scalable AI tools aligned with growth objectives. This study contributes to the evolving understanding of AI's role in global project management by emphasising the need to balance technological innovation with ethical responsibility and contextual awareness. Future research should adopt longitudinal and mixed methods approaches to explore AI adoption outcomes across varied sectors and regions.
