Abstract

This study explores rational choices and symbolic interactions in the text of the novel Life is What You Make it (2011) written by Preeti Shenoy and how it effects the protagonist’s life course. The study is qualitative and it employs Close Reading as the technique. Using Adam Smith’s (1776) Rational Choice Theory and Symbolic Interactionism postulated by Herbert Blumer (1969). The study analyzes how rationality plays an important role in Ankita’s life while making choices and how her choices are based on the meanings she associates with different symbols and her interactions based on these symbols. It also comments on the relationship between choices and their consequences.
