The status and political role of the ulama in Muslim India: Shah Walullah and his successors up to the war of 1857

Abstract

This article examines the status and political role of the ulama in Muslim India, highlighting their reformist mission and their response to the changing political landscape. Islam provides a comprehensive code of life that encompasses religious, social, economic, and political spheres. Throughout Muslim history, the ulama have played a central role in reforming society whenever Islamic principles were undermined. Their efforts have extended beyond religious revival to include social and political transformation in response to changing historical circumstances. In colonial India, the decline of Muslim political authority and the expansion of British rule created unprecedented challenges for the Muslim community. It further analyzes how Shah Waliullah sought to revive Islamic thought and his successors mobilize resistance against colonial domination, culminating in the events leading up to the war of 857.
