Abstract

The research question that is addressed by this study is how training and development, performance appraisal and HR practices affect trust in the workplace and the performance of employees. A quantitative research design was applied to collect data of 117 employees out of 170 population. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) based on SmartPLS was used to conduct the analysis. Findings showed that predictive accuracy was strong with R 2 of 0.899, 0.906, and 0.897 of employee performance, HR practices, and workplace trust respectively. The analysis of effect size proved that HR practices (f 2 = 8.746) and training and development (f 2 = 0.443) are significant sources of workplace trust. Measurement model was acceptable in terms of reliability and validity with a few items in performance appraisal and trust in the workplace having lower loading. The paper finds that open, growth driven, and trust building HR systems are a must to improve employee performance. Some of the recommendations are to enhance the appraisal procedures, enhance the developmental programs as well as fostering a culture of trust.
